Antique Silverplate Bread Fork with Wreath Handle, Circa 1900
A wonderfully substantial antique silverplate bread fork, believed to date to the late 19th or early 20th century. The petite serving piece features an elegant three-tine form with engraved foliate detailing and a beautifully modeled wreath handle of overlapping leaves.
Bread forks are one of those charming remnants of a more elaborate era of entertaining, when seemingly every task at the table had its own specialized utensil. Designed for transferring bread and rolls from a serving basket or dish without handling the remaining pieces, they were both practical and decorative additions to the table.
At approximately 5 inches long, this example is surprisingly weighty and substantial in the hand, with the quality and presence of a beautifully made piece of old silver. It is unmarked, and its maker and exact age are unknown.
Still wonderfully useful today, bring it out for a basket of warm rolls, pastries or tea sandwiches, or use it for sliced cake, cheese or fruit. A delightful little piece of antique tableware to mix among vintage and antique silver.
