Antique Oak Tantalus with Three Original Crystal Decanters, c. Late 1800s

There is something wonderfully theatrical about a tantalus, a piece designed specifically to tempt and withhold. Originally patented in 1881 by George Betjemann, a Dutch cabinet maker with workshop premises in London. The tantalus was built to secure decanters in plain sight, visible to all but accessible only to those with the key. Betjemann's pieces were retailed through Asprey's and Mappin & Webb, and original examples in complete condition are exceptionally rare today and retail for thousands of dollars.

This oak tantalus holds three original round-cut crystal decanters, a complete set, which is increasingly hard to find. It is made in a more rustic style, with metal trim and no engraving. The crystal stoppers show minimal chips consistent with age and use, and the locking bar requires a gentle pry to open, the key has been lost to time, as these types of keys so often are.

A note on use: antique crystal decanters are beautiful for display and for storing spirits you won't be drinking. The lead content in older crystal means they are best kept as the showpiece they were always meant to be. Fill them with a good Scotch, a brandy, and an Irish whiskey for the look of it. That is, after all, exactly what Betjemann intended.

Condition: Good antique condition. Rustic oak frame, metal hardware and handle. Three original crystal decanters with round stoppers; minimal chips to stoppers. Locking bar present; key missing. Measurements (approx.): 12 inches tall (to top of handle), 14 inches wide, approx 5 inches deep.
